Project Management
For most projects completed within a department or company, a project manager is usually needed to supervise by allocating tasks, monitoring employee performance, project training, controlling the budget, and signing off on a project when it is complete. Even projects that only take a week or two to complete include some form of project management.

In order to become a project manager, most people have to have a few years of experience working for a company on other projects. Along the way, they may receive guidance or training from other managers. Depending on the number of projects departments complete each year, there could be one or more project managers. In many companies, a project manager has other responsibilities in addition to leading a group of people. They may also be the head of their department, or they may have specialized job tasks. A great deal of trust is put into managers to ensure that projects are completed on time and in full. Because of cost, projects are given strict budgets that also need to be followed.

In addition to on the job training, those who want to become project managers can take project management courses at local colleges and universities. These courses will prepare students for all aspects of managing projects and will also teach them how to use different project software to make the job easier. Courses can be taken online or during the evening so they will not conflict with normal working hours. For those who are earning advanced degrees in business or management, they will be required to take a few project management courses.

Project management software can be used in a variety of ways. Managers will be able to track time on task, budgets, and the completion of various stages during a project. Holding weekly meetings may not always be necessary if project managers are able to track certain aspects of the project. Monthly meetings are usually more convenient for people working on one or more projects at a time. Project tracking software is a good investment for mangers who may be leading more than one project.

Performance evaluation and performance management are two areas of project management that are sometimes the most challenging. Keeping everyone in the group on task and excited can be difficult because of the many personality types that may be involved. This is why monthly meetings should be held in order to keep everyone informed about changes and updates. Members of the group should also receive frequent updates via email or phone conferences so everyone knows what is going on during the project. When people are not informed, they become resentful.

If a member of the group is not completing all the tasks they should be during the time allotted, it is up to the manager to ask them why and if they are having difficulty. Many times, there may be problems obtaining information or the tasks are too difficult to complete. Breaking up tasks into manageable portions is how projects are completed quickly. Tasks can be tracked using project management software.

Project evaluation is done at the end of a project. This process involves dissecting the project to determine the results, make adjustments where necessary, and evaluate each group member's contribution. There are several ways to handle the evaluation of employees. Some managers hold individual meetings to discuss strengths and weaknesses, while others wait until an employee's yearly evaluation to discuss different projects they were involved in. Performance systems software can be used to record different evaluations of projects so all employees have a running record of how they contributed to each project. Deciding on how to evaluate each member of a group should take place during the project planning stages.

Business performance may also be analyzed to see where spending could be cut or ways to utilize individual skills people may have within the group. This analysis may occur before or after a project is complete. As a result of this analysis, more project management jobs may become available.

Depending on the type of project, there may be instances where two project managers will be present. This is common in it project management, and during company project management training. When this happens, both managers usually break up a project into smaller units and track different items so they don't conflict with each other. Groups are broken up into smaller groups and assignments are handed out. Members of the group will report to a specific manager for the duration of the project. Project managers will meet to decide on budget issues, tasks, and other issues affecting the project. This type of business project is usually saved for network upgrades, new online security systems, or training all employees on new software programs.

Online project management has become more popular over the years because of increased travel, overseas business, and groups that may never meet in person, but who work on projects together. For these types of projects, having the right project software is necessary in order to track group progress and ensure that everyone has enough work to do. Weekly tasks may be sent to those involved in the project. Teleconferencing may be set-up using project management software so project leaders can meet with all members of the group at once.

When working on a construction project, it is important for everyone in the group to understand the different phases of this type of project. Visiting construction sites, compiling data, and tracking the budget are all needed for a construction project to be successful. More meetings may be required, and the hiring of outside consulting firms may also be necessary as there may be electrical and plumbing issues, interior decorating, and other concerns that members of the group will be responsible for lining up.

Project management can be an exciting career for those who enjoy working with people and who want to make a difference for the company they work for. There are many types of projects that need leaders within most companies.
